Namibia Explorer Self Drive

18 Days & 17 Nights | Self Drive | Priced Per Person

For travellers who want to cover the full breadth of Namibia’s landscapes, the Explorer is our most comprehensive self-drive journey. Eighteen days, five distinct regions, and roads that take you from the red sand of the Kalahari in the south to the vast salt flats of Etosha in the north.

Veruschka plans every overnight, every route, and every key stop. A detailed day-by-day guide travels with you so you always know what’s ahead — and can still pull off the road when something unexpected catches your eye.

Itinerary Overview

Begin in Windhoek, drive south into the Kalahari, follow the canyon country to Fish River, head northwest through Lüderitz and the Namib to Sossusvlei, north along the coast to Swakopmund, into Damaraland, and finish with Etosha before returning to Windhoek.

Day 1: Windhoek — Arrival

Collect your vehicle. Your route guide, maps, accommodation confirmations, and GPS tracks are handed over at pick-up. Spend the afternoon in the capital.

Accommodation Basis: Bed & Breakfast

Day 2–4: Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari is Namibia’s most distinctive southern landscape — rusty red dunes, sparse acacia, and desert-adapted wildlife. Two full days here to explore the terrain and watch oryx and springbok in the late afternoon light.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 5–6: Fish River Canyon

Africa’s largest canyon offers some of the most dramatic viewpoints in Southern Africa. Follow the rim at sunset, walk the designated lookouts at dawn, and take in the scale of a ravine over 160 kilometres long.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 7–8: Lüderitz & Kolmanskop

Head west to the Atlantic. Lüderitz is one of Namibia’s most atmospheric towns — a diamond-rush settlement that still feels stranded in its own era. Kolmanskop’s sand-filled rooms and the Garub wild horses are essential stops.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 9–11: Sossusvlei & Deadvlei

Three days at the heart of the Namib Desert. Sunrise over Deadvlei, the climb to Big Daddy Dune, the silence of Sesriem Canyon. The Namib Sand Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the oldest desert on earth — and three days here do it justice.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 12–13: Swakopmund & the Atlantic Coast

Swakopmund is the rest point between desert and north. Seafood, cool air, and optional activities: sandboarding, kayaking with seals, the Moon Landscape. Two nights lets you use the town as a base.

Accommodation Basis: Bed & Breakfast

Day 14–15: Damaraland

One of Namibia’s least-visited and most dramatic regions. Ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, desert-adapted black rhinos, the petrified forest, and enormous open vistas. Accommodation here is some of the most characterful in the country.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 16–17: Etosha National Park

Two full days in one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. The waterholes concentrate game in the dry season in a way few parks can match. Elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and hundreds of bird species.

Accommodation Basis: Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 18: Return to Windhoek — Departure

Drive south to Windhoek for a final lunch before the airport, or head directly to Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Why Choose This Route?
